Like the world needs another one

Welcome to a new blog!

It's been some time coming, but it's finally time for me stop just reading other people's blogs but to get off my backside and create something instead. Why now?

Well, after five years in the world of the working, Esther and I are taking a break from the Rat Race and off on a jaunt around world. Not excessive, but a good trip of eight months. Now you'd think the last thing people would want to read about while sat in their offices and homes is the exploits of people who've made it out, but I lost count of the number of people asking "Are you going to keep a blog?"

Maybe they were just being polite. Maybe they were just asking because they'd assume that a techie like me must be keeping a blog, and it'll remain forever unread. Whatever the reason, it inspired me to spend a good 30 minutes setting it up rather than sorting out all the Things That Need Doing before we head off.

So, if you fancy finding out where we've got to, bookmark, subscribe, scribble on a post-it or do whatever it is you do to remember where to go and we'll do our best to update this on a regular basis.

Yet again it's waaaaay too late to be up watching world cup highlights (could be worse, it could be Trisha repeats) but the blog was mentioned over a crappy BLT sandwich at lunch and it popped into my head again just now to take a first look. I'll be keeping a jealous eye on your progress...oh, and Holland get Portugal in the 2nd round...ouch!

We have been determined to finish our blog on least one continent before we reach the end of our trip, and we've just about pulled it off. We have to admit it is getting a bit silly. We're actually only 2 weeks away from returning home, but have been busy having a good time in South America, French Polynesia, New Zealand, Tasmania, the East Coast of Australia and currently Malaysia. We promise we'll write about all these places as well and get the blog up to date soon (James needs something to do whilst looking for a job). South America Flythrough

We started our South America trip by doing the Inca trail in Peru which was a four day hike through the Andes. We travelled with horses and llamas and alpacas, and stayed (camping) in local villages surrounded by smiling kids with grubby faces and colourful knitware. I'd never been anywhere that high before (up to nearly 5000m, or 16,000ft) and you really notice the thin air. Usually when falling asleep and your breathing slows and you wake up suddenly gasping for air. Exhausting but some amazing views. The trek culminated with a visit to Machu Picchu, the famous lost city of the Incas, a spectacular site hidden amongst the mountains. We had a bit of trouble leaving Peru, as we were travelling with a tour company and our truck had been slowly falling apart on the way down to meet us. Miami Nice?

Everyone has pre-conceived ideas about Miami. Palm lined avenues, cops in Ferraris, babes in bikinis, white jackets with the arms pushed up. Yeah, okay, all I knew about Miami came from Miami Vice. The flip side to this glamour is the drug trade, violence and general seediness. Fortunately this is a somewhat exaggerated view of the city, at least in our experience. We arrived at the airport mid-morning, our flight from Montreal having left at 5am. We got a taxi into town along quiet avenues, the sun glinting off the large glass and white-painted hotels and giving the water a lovely deep blue colour. The roads crossed bridges over harbours dotted with gleaming yachts, and there was none of the grotty neighbourhoods you might expect to pass on a drive from an airport into a major city.
